Alexia Boyagian, Western University

I look back at my mother with the same eyes as hers
The same eyes as her mother had as well as her sister
For my mother and I, It’s easy to sing the same songs
We’re linked and tied and bound ever strong
Longer than we knew
The roots grew
Deeper and deeper
until we only had each other
What more could we need
Than our womanhood
But what more is womanhood
than chain links on the ground
Scattered minds and a tendency to look down
Linked through his superiority
For he knew more than blood knows the heart
But my mother knew the most
Till death does it part
More than a university degree
But that’s not the message he gave to me
And now that I’m older
We exchange knowing glances
With the same eyes
The same past
And the same future
